nvidia-xconfig + GNU GPL A quick rant for the day... One item not familiar with many Linux users is that the nvidia-xconfig utility (introduced with the Rel80 1.0-8174 drivers) is that this X.Org configuration utility is copyrighted by NVIDIA although it does comply with the GNU GPL. For the uninitiated, the GNU General Public License allows the program to be freely re-distributed and modified. The heart of nvidia-xconfig is written in C, and at the time of writing the latest version is 1.0. The source-code includes the X.Org/XFree86 configuration parser as well as all of the various options and related code. For reference, ATI's aticonfig (which was the first utility to premiere with these X configuration abilities for vendor-specific features) is not freely open-source software at this time. A GNU Make is included, for easily compiling the utility, which theoretically could allow those running obsolete drivers to still use this green program. The nvidia-xconfig v1.0 source-code can be downloaded here. Posted by Michael Larabel on February, 11 2006 |
